Brewer’s Spent Grain with Yeast Amendment Shows Potential for Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation of Weeds and Pythium irregulare

چکیده

Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is a promising alternative to chemical fumigation for controlling soilborne plant pathogens and weeds. This study investigated the impact of brewer’s spent grain (BSG), locally available carbon source, on various weed species oomycete pathogen Pythium irregulare in ASD. Two greenhouse studies were conducted using BSG yeast at full reduced rates completely randomized design with four replicates two runs per study. In both studies, ASD treatments significantly decreased seed viability all inoculum, while promoting higher cumulative anaerobicity compared non-treated control. The addition had notable effect when combined but not rice bran. When used rates, supplementation enhanced efficacy BSG, providing comparable control rate most species, including redroot pigweed, white clover, yellow nutsedge. Interestingly, no treatment affected temperature. Furthermore, caused concentrations volatile fatty acids bran finding suggests that inclusion shows potential reducing input required effective disinfestation.

Perspectives of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation

Biological soil disinfestation is an environmentally friendly method to disinfest soil. From now on we refer to it as anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD). With ASD a green manure crop (40 t/ha) is homogeneously incorporated into the topsoil (0-30 cm) after which the field is lightly compacted and irrigated. Subsequently the field is mechanically covered with air tight virtually impermeable film...

Second Generation Ethanol Production from Brewers’ Spent Grain

Ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomasses raises a global interest because it represents a good alternative to petroleum-derived energies and reduces the food versus fuel conflict generated by first generation ethanol. In this study, alkaline-acid pretreated brewers’ spent grain (BSG) was evaluated for ethanol production after enzymatic hydrolysis with commercial enzymes. The obtained h...

Unravelling the mechanism of pathogen inactivation during anaerobic soil disinfestation

Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) for the control of multiple soilborne pathogens is a viable alternative to the application of biocides and soil steaming. ASD implies soil wetting, incorporation of fresh organic matter, and covering with airtight plastic foil for several weeks. To speed up the whole process, Thatchtec has developed a procedure based on defined agricultural products (referred...

Evaluation of Cover Crops with Potential for Use in Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) for Susceptibility to Three Species of Meloidogyne.

Several cover crops with potential for use in tropical and subtropical regions were assessed for susceptibility to three common species of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Crops were selected based on potential use as organic amendments in anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) applications. Nematode juvenile (J2) numbers in soil and roots, egg production, a...

Pseudoporphyria associated with consumption of brewers' yeast.

A case of pseudoporphyria associated with excessive consumption of brewers ' yeast was studied. Detailed analysis of the yeast tablets by high performance liquid chromatography showed the presence of dicarboxylic deuteroporphyrin , mesoporphyrin, and protoporphyrin; coproporphyrin I and III isomers; and uroporphyrin I and III isomers. The faecal porphyrin concentration of the patient taking yea...
